Postural Correction Using Denneroll in Smithtown and Selden, NY

If you’re a patient at Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy in either Smithtown or Selden, you have seen the Denneroll utilized to help us correct abnormal postures. Most people describe it as the scary block, but it isn’t all that traumatizing. It is a great tool in correcting postural dysfunctions, such as cervical loss of lordosis (straightening of the spine).

Importance of posture:

A postural correction has become a focal point of the Chiropractic side of the practice.  As some may know, there is an ideal posture of the spine. From the front or back, the spine should be perfectly straight without shifts to the left and right. From the side, there are actually 3 curves in the spine that allow for even transfer of weight from head to toe.  The curves of the spine include:

  • Cervical Curve (lordosis)- Neck
  • Thoracic Curve (kyphosis)- Mid Back
  • Lumbar Curve (lordosis)- Lower Back

When one of these is off, several consequences can cascade. With our society relying more and more on technology, we are finding good posture to be less common. We find poor posture is very common throughout Smithtown and Selden, NY. Good posture is important for the following reasons:

  • Prevents the spine from putting unnecessary stress on the spinal cord and nerves
  • Helps us stand, sit, and lie in positions that place the least strain on supporting muscles during activity
  • Keeps bones and joints in correct alignment so the muscles are used properly
  • Helps to decrease the abnormal wearing of joints
  • Prevents strain, overuse, backache, muscular pain, and fatigue from muscle overuse

Additionally, when posture is good, your entire nervous system is able to work efficiently. Often times, dysfunction in your nervous system can manifest into other systemic complications. Therefore, it is important to maintain good postural alignment.

What is the Denneroll?

The Denneroll is an orthotic device designed by an Australian chiropractor named Dr. Adrian Dennewald. Its unique design provides a gentle but effective stretch that assists in the correction of abnormal cervical lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, and lumbar lordosis. The Denneroll can assist in the relief of pain and muscle tension, as well as enhance patient comfort and improve health. The design of the Denneroll allows for easy use at home, supporting the care provided in the office.

The need for the use of a Denneroll needs to be determined by a health care professional that is CBP (Chiropractic Biophysics) trained. Several of our chiropractors at Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy are certified to provide Denneroll as a treatment option.  CBP is a technique that was originally founded and developed by Dr. Deed Harrison. This technique emphasizes optimal spinal alignment as the primary goal of chiropractic care while simultaneously documenting improvements in pain and functional outcomes. The treatment is unique in its structural rehabilitation of the spine. In general, the goal of CBP treatment is to get the spine to as near normal posture as possible.

The Denneroll is often used in collaboration with other treatments as well. It is rare that a patient comes into the office and ONLY use this. Most patients will receive manual treatment to help further relax musculature and adjust the joints and corrective exercises to improve flexibility and strength, with Denneroll being just another tool for correction. The Denneroll looks scarier than it actually is. We make sure to ease the patient in comfortably by started with short bouts of time and build up as tolerated. The end goal is to be able to tolerate the Denneroll for over 10-15minutes for greatest correction.

Who would it benefit?

As stated before, poor posture is rising up all statistics. Therefore, anyone and everyone could benefit from this tool. Athletes, children, elderly, weekend warriors, car accident survivors – it can help almost everyone! Even if you are in crisis mode, when pain is improved, an underlying postural dysfunction is often found. When not corrected, this dysfunction can lead to repeated incidences or additional injuries. Therefore, it is important to get a consult before crisis mode, but if you do find out too late in the game, an intervention can still be provided. The only people we typically don’t use it on are those with underlying instabilities or fractures in the spine – for obvious reasons.

Conclusion:

The Denneroll is simply another tool used in the treatment of several of our patients at Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy. Our chiropractors in both Smithtown and Selden, NY are certified to provide this service and help improve your posture. By improving your posture, you can decrease pain and prevent future injuries from happening.
