    About Us

Dr. Jeffrey Block founded Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy in Smithtown in 1993. He soon opened a second location in Selden, intended for his brother Dr. Richard Block, who was getting ready to graduate from chiropractic college and join his brother in practice. Since then, Dr. Jeff has switched to the Selden office and Dr. Rick works out of our Smithtown location. We work with physical therapists to offer our communities a complete healing experience.

    Healing From the Inside Out

Our goal is to teach people that health comes from within, rather than from outside intervention. Staying healthy is the superior choice to seeking treatment once you’re sick. Therefore, we’re here to get you out of pain and help you prevent future problems from affecting your life.

    Determining Your Specific Needs

The practitioners at both of our locations are trained in different areas and provide a range of complementary services. Our first goal is to figure out why problems exist in your body. Then, if we determine that we can help you, we’ll discuss the options you have to regain your health. Rather than just focusing on making you feel better, we address the cause of your pain.

The patients we see are often seeking help for:

    • Family health
    • Geriatric health
    • No-fault injury
    • Pain management
    • Sports injury
    • Weight issues
    • Workers’ compensation
    • And much more!

    Rebuilding Strength After An Injury

An injury or illness can take time to overcome and leave you demotivated. After an extended period of activity, you will need to recover and rebuild your strength and fitness. While you may be fired up to dive into your activities in full force as quickly as possible, this is not always the best idea. To rebuild strength after an injury, it’s vital to engage in a physical therapy program. Sports Injury Treatment in Coram can help you achieve this safely and effectively so you can return to the field with your teammates. Here are some ways our team at Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy can help you rebuild strength after an injury:

    • Stretching – After an injury, you may be left with stiff joints and muscles that can severely affect critical daily functions. An injury can also lead to scar tissue build-up. Regular stretching allows your joints and muscles to maintain a good range of motion and enable you to better participate in your rehabilitation.
    • Therapeutic Exercises – Physical therapy primarily involves strengthening exercises that help you improve the function of your muscles. Our goal is to help you improve your strength, endurance, and flexibility.
    • Core Training – Core strengthening exercises are a vital component of physical therapy. Your core acts as a pillar for the rest of your body, so core weakness could leave you at risk for damage. Our team will utilize exercises that increase your core strength and stability, allowing you to recover more efficiently and improve your athletic performance.

    What is a Muscle Tear?

Your muscles are vital to performing even the smallest of movements. Muscles contain several tough fibers bundled together and are surrounded by an outer sheath that allows them to move over surrounding tissues. When muscle fibers are stretched beyond their regular bounds, they can tear and cause significant pain. Muscle tears can occur as a result of fatigue or overuse. Some of the signs of a muscle tear include:

    • Swelling, redness, or bruising.
    • Difficulty using the injured muscle.
    • Weakness.
    • Pain when using the muscle.

There is no definite way to prevent a muscle tear. If you’ve experienced a muscle tear, our sports injury treatment in Coram can help you heal efficiently.

    Recovering from Muscle Tears

After suffering a muscle tear, resting is crucial to ensure that you do not further injure yourself. As a devoted athlete, you may try to work through the pain to stay on track, but this only further damages the muscle fibers. The initial goal for sports injury treatment in Coram for muscle tears is to manage any pain and inflammation in the area. Therapy will mainly focus on decreasing your symptoms and restoring function. Some of the treatments we utilize include:

    • Therapeutic exercises to strengthen the affected muscle.
    • Joint mobilization techniques.
    • Heat or ice therapy.
    • Electrical stimulation.

Common Winter SportsSports Injury Treatment in Coram

Now that winter is upon us, a new sports season has come around. Whether they are indoors or outdoors, school-related or intramurals, sports commonly associated with this season include a few of the following:

    • Basketball.
    • Ice Skating.
    • Hockey.
    • Skiing/Snowboarding.
    • Wrestling.

    Common Winter Injuries

While the thrill of an upcoming season can lead to copious amounts of enthusiasm, our team at Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy know that injuries can dampen that positivity.  Should you suffer a sports injury, you can come to us for Sports Injury Treatment in Coram for proper rehabilitation. Common sports injuries for this time of year include:

    • Ankle Sprains: An ankle sprain occurs when enough stress is placed on the ligaments in your ankle that cause them to move beyond the normal range of motion. You may not be able to put any weight on the affected foot as a result.
    • Dislocated Shoulder: Your shoulder joint is less stable than others, meaning there is a higher risk for dislocation. Falls from skating, being slammed to the mat in wrestling, or any blunt force to the shoulder can pop it out of place, resulting in pain and limited mobility.
    • Knee Injuries: There are a variety of knee injuries that you can suffer from this winter season. From ligament sprains and tears to dislocated or fractured kneecaps, these issues can cause pain and make moving around impossible.

    Injury Prevention During The Winter

Unfortunately, a significant injury could potentially lead to the early conclusion of your season.  Further purporting the importance of preventive methods, as these should be taken to help avoid injury. One way to avoid injury or prevent one from recurring is to undergo Sports Injury Treatment in Coram. Two other methods of combating injury may include a few of the following:

    • Stretching: This is a great way to improve your flexibility and athletic performance. One reason for this is because stretching can increase the blood flow to your muscles.  Increased flexibility can make your body susceptible to injury.
    • Warm-Ups/Cool-Downs: Performing warm-ups to gradually rev up your cardiovascular system is very important before participating in physical activity. The warm-up period will help prepare your body for the force you will soon be exerting and help combat injury.  Additionally, cooling down can be just as vital. The cool-down period allows for your heart rate to gradually return to what it was before the activity began and helps regulate blood flow.

In order to perform your best, you’ll need to train in all aspects of fitness. Our team has developed a sports performance program that combines strength and conditioning with speed and agility training to enhance your sports performance and aid in sports injury treatment in Coram.
