Welcome To Blocks Sports Physical Therapy in Hauppauge
Dr. Jeffrey Block founded Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy in Smithtown in 1993. He soon opened a second location in Selden, intended for his brother Dr. Richard Block, who was getting ready to graduate from chiropractic college and join his brother in practice. Since then, Dr. Jeff has switched to the Selden office and Dr. Rick works out of our Smithtown location. We work with physical therapists to offer our communities a complete healing experience.
Healing From the Inside Out
Our goal is to teach people that health comes from within, rather than from outside intervention. Staying healthy is the superior choice to seeking treatment once you’re sick. Therefore, we’re here to get you out of pain and help you prevent future problems from affecting your life.
Determining Your Specific Needs
The practitioners at both of our locations are trained in different areas and provide a range of complementary services. Our first goal is to figure out why problems exist in your body. Then, if we determine that we can help you, we’ll discuss the options you have to regain your health. Rather than just focusing on making you feel better, we address the cause of your pain. The patients we see are often seeking help for

Risks of Sports Injuries:
There are risks when it comes to how sports injuries are created and what can increase your chance of developing one. Here are some risks that are included in how you can get a sports injury:
- If you have not been regularly active, automatically put your body into a lot more work than it can handle.
- Don’t warm up properly before any exercise, making sure you are preparing your body for the workout you are about to do.
- Play contact sports.
Below is a list of the most common sports injuries that you can have that include the following:
- Knee Injuries
- Swollen Muscles
- Achilles tendon rupture
- Rotator cuff injury
All of these sports injuries can happen when you are not taking care of your body in the correct way before you exercise. If any of these injuries do happen, we offer chiropractic and physical therapy.
What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic Care is a hands-on treatment that helps make sure that your body’s musculoskeletal structure is properly aligned and tries to have the body heal itself. This type of therapy is used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.
Chiropractic Care Benefits:
Chiropractic Therapy provides many benefits that are effective to any related injuries, including sports injuries. Some chiropractic Therapy benefits are:
- Improves joint mobility, function, and health
- It makes tight muscles loose
- Speeds up the recovery process
- Improves athletic performance
What is Physical Therapy?
Physical Therapy helps you restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities. Physical Therapy also helps re-establish, maintain, and promote overall fitness and health. We use specially designed exercises and equipment that help the patient regain or improve their physical abilities.
Difference between Chiropractic Therapy and Physical Therapy?
Both of these therapies serve a purpose in how they will benefit you the most, but the main difference between them is their intended purpose. If you are a patient looking to increase your overall physical function and correct the body’s alignment, then you would look into chiropractic therapy. If you are a patient looking for recovery after you have injured yourself, then you would look into physical therapy.
Prevention of Sports Injuries:
There are many different ways that you can prevent yourself from a sports injury, and below is a list of different things you can do to avoid that.
- Make sure you are using the proper technique to make sure you are using the appropriate stances and postures.
- Ensure you have the proper equipment, wear the right shoes, and have the right athletic equipment.
- Do not overdo it; many people who notice they are in pain try to avoid it and “work through the pain” that is not the best idea; take time to rest and let your body recover.
- Cool down after your activity, including the same workouts that you did in the warmup, do it in the cooldown.
- Resume activity slowly; after you take time to recover, take things slowly and ease yourself into your workouts, starting low and gradually increasing as time goes on.

Recovering From A Hamstring Injury
Your hamstring is made up of three muscles located behind your thigh. These are the muscles that allow you to bend your knee. When your hamstring becomes strained, these muscles might begin to tear. Activities such as running, jumping, or sudden starting and stopping can trigger a hamstring strain. If you have a hamstring injury and feel you may benefit from seeing a physical therapist, visit us at Block Chiropractic and Sports Physical Therapy.
There are many potential causes of a hamstring injury. Some of these causes include:
- Lack of warm-up or stretching exercises
- Weak muscles or imbalance in muscle strength in or near the hamstring
- Improper footwear
- Recurring injury
If the strain is mild, the pain will not be too bad. However, a more severe strain can make it impossible to walk. Some other symptoms include:
- Sudden pain during exercise
- Popping or snapping feeling during exercise
- Pain in the back of the thigh or lower buttock, especially when walking or bending
A physical examination from your doctor would be the best way to diagnosis a hamstring injury.
Treatment and Recovery
The recovery time for a hamstring injury will depend on the severity of the tear or strain. A minor strain may only take a few days to recover from, however, a partial or complete muscle tear can take weeks to months.
While it depends on the severity of the hamstring injury, it may be able to heal by itself. Within the first two to three days of experiencing this pain, try to speed up the healing process by utilizing the RICE method:
- Compression bandages
- Elevate your leg
Also, taking anti-inflammatory painkillers may speed up your recovery time!
Sports Physical Therapy Hauppauge
However, if the strain doesn’t go away on its own, it’s important to seek professional help. Those treatment options involve:
- Physical therapy- Your physical therapist will give you different exercises that improve your muscles’ range of motion, flexibility, and strength.
- Surgery- If other methods don’t work, surgery may be an option. The muscles are stitched in place.
Treating Golfers Elbow
Medial Epicondylitis, more commonly known as Golfer’s Elbow, is a condition that causes pain to the tendons in your elbow. It is more commonly experienced by Golfers due to the repetitive motion involved in the sport. Yet anyone else can suffer from this condition due to repetitive stress. Golfer’s Elbow, often confused with Tennis Elbow, affects the inner muscles of the elbow causing pain and inflammation, radiating down the forearm to the inner wrist, while Tennis Elbow affects the outer muscles of the elbow. With any straining or overuse of the elbow, you may find yourself in need of medical attention.
If you are struggling with pain and stiffness, there is a chiropractic technique that can bring you some relief. The Active Release Technique (ART) is a non-invasive soft-tissue manipulation method that works by breaking up scar tissue within the muscles, tendons, and ligaments to promote healing and blood flow to the area. If you have ever had an injury, minor or severe, there is a possibility that you have scar tissue underneath the skin. This scar tissue can surround important muscles, tendons, ligaments, and even nerve-endings, making it difficult for you to move without pain and stiffness.
How Does ART Work for Golfer’s Elbow?
At the beginning of your appointment, your chiropractor will evaluate your condition and examine your elbow before proceeding. Once your chiropractor has a good idea of your specific pain area, he or she will begin your treatment.
Active Release Technique for golfer’s elbow involves the manipulation of the elbow by both you and your chiropractor. In some cases, your chiropractor will give you directions on which movements to make with your elbow in order to effectively break up the scar tissue beneath the skin. There are innumerable amounts of motions that your chiropractor may direct you towards.
Your chiropractor may also use the Active Release Technique to manipulate the muscles through the use of movement and massage of the elbow.
This manipulation of specified points will trigger healing by:
- Breaking up the scar tissue
- Pushing excess joint fluid out of the area
- Stimulating the blood flow of nutrients to the area
