    About Us

Dr. Jeffrey Block founded Block Sports Chiropractic and Physical Therapy in Smithtown in 1993. He soon opened a second location in Selden, intended for his brother Dr. Richard Block, who was getting ready to graduate from chiropractic college and join his brother in practice. Since then, Dr. Jeff has switched to the Selden office and Dr. Rick works out of our Smithtown location. We work with physical therapists to offer our communities a complete healing experience.

    Healing From the Inside Out

Our goal is to teach people that health comes from within, rather than from outside intervention. Staying healthy is the superior choice to seeking treatment once you’re sick. Therefore, we’re here to get you out of pain and help you prevent future problems from affecting your life.

    Determining Your Specific Needs

The practitioners at both of our locations are trained in different areas and provide a range of complementary services. Our first goal is to figure out why problems exist in your body. Then, if we determine that we can help you, we’ll discuss the options you have to regain your health. Rather than just focusing on making you feel better, we address the cause of your pain. The patients we see are often seeking help for:

    • Family health
    • Geriatric health
    • No-fault injury
    • Pain management
    • Sports injury
    • Weight issues
    • Workers’ compensation
    • And much more!

Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy would like to discuss common throwing arm injuries for athletes and how we can help! Continue reading to discover more! In throwing athletes, shoulder strain and stress are primary concerns. Due to the nature of sports like volleyball, baseball, tennis, and some track and field events, these athletes perform many repetitive overhead activities. Some of the most common injuries for throwing athletes include:Sports Injury Doctor in Smithtown

    • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
    • Shoulder Impingement
    • Labral Tears
    • Shoulder Instability
    • Biceps Tendonitis

Sports Injury Doctor in Smithtown can help throwing athletes both prevent and recover from these common injuries. When beginning physical therapy for a throwing athlete, our specialists will assess range of motion, muscle strength, posture, and coordination. This helps to identify any existing or potential problems. Our team will then create an individualized plan of care that can help strengthen the athlete’s muscles and reduce pain levels in preparation for returning to throwing activities. Physical therapy sessions typically focus on core exercises, strengthening shoulder muscles, and improving flexibility in the shoulder joint. This helps to restore standard movement patterns during throwing activities. It’s essential for throwing athletes to practice proper form, gradually increase their activity level and focus on building strength in the muscles used during throwing. We may also use other modalities, such as:

    • Hot and cold therapy
    • Ultrasound
    • Electrical stimulation
    • Therapeutic Massage

In addition, balance and coordination exercises can help to improve throwing accuracy and power. The goal of physical therapy for throwing athletes is to help them return to activities free from pain and with improved performance. Through proper strengthening, stretching, and form instruction, Sports Injury Doctor in Smithtown can help prevent common injuries while helping you reach peak performance levels safely.

    What is a Muscle Tear?

Your muscles are vital to performing even the smallest of movements. Muscles contain several tough fibers bundled together and are surrounded by an outer sheath that allows them to move over surrounding tissues. When stretched beyond their regular bounds, muscle fibers can tear and cause significant pain. Muscle tears can occur as a result of fatigue or overuse. Some of the signs of a muscle tear include:

    • Swelling, redness, or bruising.
    • Difficulty using the injured muscle.
    • Weakness.
    • Pain when using the muscle.

There is no definite way to prevent a muscle tear. If you’ve experienced a muscle tear, our Sports Injury Doctor in Smithtown can help you heal efficiently.

    Recovering from Muscle Tears

After suffering a muscle tear, resting is crucial to ensure that you do not further injure yourself. As a devoted athlete, you may try to work through the pain to stay on track, but this only further damages the muscle fibers. The initial goal for Sports Injury Doctor in Smithtown for muscle tears is to manage any pain and inflammation in the area. Therapy will mainly focus on decreasing your symptoms and restoring function. Some of the treatments we utilize include:

    • Therapeutic exercises to strengthen the affected muscle.
    • Joint mobilization techniques.
    • Heat or ice therapy.
    • Electrical stimulation.

Our staff will thoroughly evaluate the degree of your muscle tear and implement a rehabilitation program that suits your needs and promotes effective recovery.

    Rebuilding Strength After An Injury

An injury or illness can take time to overcome and leave you demotivated. After an extended period of activity, you will need to recover and rebuild your strength and fitness. While you may be fired up to dive into your activities fully as quickly as possible, this is not always the best idea. To rebuild strength after an injury, engaging in a physical therapy program is vital. Sports Injury Doctor in Smithtown can help you achieve this safely and effectively so you can return to the field with your teammates. Here are some ways our team at Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy can help you rebuild strength after an injury:

    • Stretching – After an injury, you may have stiff joints and muscles that can severely affect critical daily functions. An injury can also lead to scar tissue build-up. Regular stretching allows your joints and muscles to maintain a good range of motion and enable you to better participate in your rehabilitation.
    • Therapeutic Exercises – Physical therapy primarily involves strengthening exercises that help you improve the function of your muscles. We aim to help you improve your strength, endurance, and flexibility.
    • Core Training – Core strengthening exercises are a vital component of physical therapy. Your core acts as a pillar for the rest of your body, so core weakness could leave you at risk for damage. Our team will utilize exercises that increase your core strength and stability, allowing you to recover more efficiently and improve your athletic performance.

Active Release Techniques For Running Injuries

Running injuries can stem from various factors, including poor body mechanics, muscle imbalances, overuse, or rapid mileage buildup. Runners risk developing an injury even with appropriate training, proper footwear, and good technique. At Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, our Sports Injury Doctor in Smithtown can include active release techniques to help runners recover from their injuries and get back on track. Continue reading to discover more about active release techniques. Active release technique (ART) is based on soft tissue movement. When the ligaments, tendons, or muscles are overused or injured, scar tissue develops to reinforce the injured area. If scar tissue continues to build up and connect to the surrounding muscular structures, it can cause reduced strength and mobility and increase pain in the area. The active release technique reduces scar tissue buildup by applying pressure and manipulating the muscle. While the active release technique is often compared to deep tissue massage and other manual therapies, there are significant differences. Sports Injury Doctor in Smithtown

This therapy employs a lighter touch and focuses on breaking up scar tissue through targeted and informed assessment and treatment. Active release technique can be used to treat various problem areas, but some of the injuries it can treat include:

    • Shin Splints.
    • Tendonitis.
    • Hip Flexor Strains.
    • Iliotibial Band (IT) Strains.
    • Piriformis Syndrome.
    • Plantar Fasciitis.
    • Runner’s Knee.

How Do Active Release Techniques Help Recovery?

At Block Sports Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, our experts will evaluate your running injury and determine if ART is best for you. ART is a valuable component of Sports Injury Doctor in Smithtown for runners that can provide numerous benefits, including:

    • Increased flexibility in the hamstring and hip flexors.
    • Decreased pain in the hips and other problem areas.
    • Reduced scar tissue buildup around muscles and tendons.
    • Increased stride length while running.
    • Improved glide between muscles.
    • Long-term injury prevention.

Whether you are suffering from back pain, compressed nerves, an injury, or tight muscles, ART can help pinpoint the cause of your pain and enable your body to heal itself.
